Dr. James O’Toole, Patient Care Comes First

Pittsburgh has never seen a more qualified, compassionate, enthusiastic, patient-centered plastic surgeon. With more than 15 years of experience, Dr. James O'Toole is changing the face of plastic surgery, one patient at a time.

Born and raised in Pittsburgh, PA with formal education from the University of Notre Dame and Saint Louis University School of Medicine, Dr. O’Toole began his plastic surgery training at the University of Pittsburgh as the first surgeon fellowship-trained for body contouring after weight loss.

Dr. O’Toole continued his extensive training in New York City with the largest and longest running practice of its kind, Long Island Plastic Surgical Group, PC, as their Plastic Surgery Chief Resident. There, he was at the forefront of developing direct-to-implant breast reconstruction techniques to evolve the way breast cancer surgery was typically performed. The experience he obtained working with and learning from some of the finest surgeons in the world was the perfect foundation to springboard his plastic surgery career.

While in New York, Dr. O’Toole made great strides learning about historically successful surgical methods. Over time, he took those methods a step further and began applying new, innovative surgical techniques to advance his patient’s treatment. Specifically, his breakthrough approach with breast cancer incisions, lift procedures, direct-to-implant breast reconstruction, and wound care, has changed the way modern plastic surgery is performed today. Unlike other, more traditional-minded surgeons, Dr. O’Toole’s progressive approach combines the aesthetic-centered techniques of a cosmetic surgeon with medically centered practices to create a more beautiful end result. His patients report time and time again that not only are they thrilled with the end result, but they know that their happiness, comfort and safety are Dr. O’Toole’s top priority.

Today, as a double board certified surgeon, with both the American Board of Surgery and the American Board of Plastic Surgery, Dr. O’Toole is leading the way as an innovative, surgical game-changer. He is not only the Director of the Wound Care Program at UPMC Shadyside, he is also successfully leading his own private practice where he feels he can make the biggest impact with his patients.

While Dr. O’Toole’s list of credentials and educational background is extensive, what patients find most distinctive is that he cares deeply for each individual and is focused on helping them look better and feel better. Always.
